workshops
One of the highlights of our Camp each year is the workshops. The workshops are designed to provide teaching which will engage the campers’ interests, teaching them not only the faith but also how to apply that faith to life in the church. The idea of the workshops is that the campers will come home from camp with new skills to serve the Church with, and the knowledge of the Orthodox Faith that comes with those skills. We have included a brief description of the types of workshops we have had in previous years below. More information on specific workshops for this year will posted later in the Spring.
Workshops
Iconography
Ages 10+
This workshop provides an opportunity to experience the ancient art of the Church. It will be taught by Master Iconographer Heather McKean and by the end of the workshop you will leave camp with an authentic Icon.
Illuminated Manuscript
Ages 10+
In this workshop you will learn how to create stylized letters, commonly found on liturgical objects such as Icons and in Scripture. It will leave the student with a greater ability to create beautiful letters that can be applied to a number of different uses such as personalised cards or invitations.
Book Binding
Ages 8+
The workshop teaches the student the ability to bind books, which once learned can be used for creating personalised journals, prayer books and story books.
Film
Ages 8+
In this workshop the students will develop a story that they will act out on film. The student will learn skills in film, production, and editing. At the end of the production it will be played for all the campers.
Liturgical Trades
Ages 8+
This is the most varied workshop in that it has the most trades to discover. Each trade is three hours or less and will provide a wide range of experiences. The trades include candle making, prosphora making, Altar serving for boys, personalized prayer books for girls and icon mounting.
Systema
Ages 8+
We are deeply committed to the principles of non-violence as a Christian ideal. We live our life according to the teaching of Christ who said, “He who strikes you on the one cheek, turn to him the other.” Systema is a kind of martial art developed over the last thousand years in Russia which is different in kind and approach from every other martial art. Systema is, in fact, rooted in the teaching of the Orthodox faith and is being taught as a voluntary workshop at this camp because it teaches basic physical awareness of surroundings, peaceful-mindedness, and techniques for self-control and safety in times and situations of unsolicited conflict.
